This story really touched me, and I can't even say exactly why. It was exotic and strange, and a little noir. Almost haunting. I've read other reviews here, and it seems some people were looking for something deep and meaningful in this story that they didn't find. Oddly enough I was deeply moved by the story. I found it incredible in the current day that a stranger would care enough to actually seek out another person that they came in contact with quite briefly and randomly, and try to help them through their problems. I thought it was a wonderful, kind gesture from a very special young man. I would love to see some continuation, some further epilogue, of how it works out between them, if Cathy recovers further, maybe goes back to college, etc. I agree there is a lot more that could be told, before and after, this story, but still this story has stayed with me since I originally read it more than a year ago.

I hate to admit this because I absolutely adore Selena Kitt, but this was not one of my favorite stories. I would have liked more backstory. Why was Cathy no longer in school? What role did her mother really play in that choice? What started Cathy's obsession with making random phone calls?
I did like the fact that Cathy and Seth really got to know each before anything happened. They were able to build an emotional and intellectual connection before they physical aspect was brought into the relationship.
To me this was also very defferent from the other short stories I've read by Selena.
Its refreshing. Seth helped heal Cathy and bring her out of the place she was hiding for so long.
Their intimate relationship was very sweet too. Both of them constantly considering the others wants and needs.
I enjoyed this and I'm sure you will too.
This is a sweet story of a girl (Cathy) struggling to make connections with the world. Lonely, she makes random calls to strangers, just to hear a voice that's making a connection - however fleeting or small - with her, and she never speaks. Only one time someone (Seth) startles her into speaking, and they begin a friendship over the phone that begins to heal some of the cracks in her armor and allow her to reach out to people around her. Cathy definitely has some issues, depression and anxiety most predominantly, but they're treated well. I choose to interpret her random calls as quirky rather than deserving of commitment to an insane asylum, as some other reviewers seem to. The story is told from her point of view, and her descriptions of feeling like she's floating away, like she's observing from outside her body, etc. might be something that those who've never experienced prolonged anxiety or depression would find disturbing. As someone who has struggled with anxiety, however, I found it a refreshingly adept portrayal, and not overdone. Accept Cathy for her quirks, and enjoy the sweetness of Seth coaxing her out of her shell.
This is a really sad and lonely tale.
Cathy is a young woman who dropped out of college,and for a time worked at a supermarket, and who seems very much a loner, who needing to feel some sort of human connection, randomly calls people in her state and silently listens to them until they hang up.
One day she gets Seth, whose way of answering the phone actually shocks her enough so that she finds the strength to answer back.
On the one hand I found my heart aching for Cathy,her loneliness and her having closed herself off from the world makes her nearly inept at handling any sort of social contact. At the same time,I wish there was more to this book to help us understand her,and to see whether Seth becomes her compass in the world.
I think the author tries to give us some hope, but I still was left feeling kind of empty by this book.
To be honest, I'm glad it didn't cost me anything, I would have felt even worse if I had to pay for it, as if I had been tricked, by the cover and book description into thinking there was more to this short story than there actually was, but on the other hand maybe there was just too much symbolism I was just not willing to decipher.
Connections had been sitting around on my TBR pile for awhile. I decided to try and reading it for a Halloween read. As it sounded rather creepy.

Even though it is really a short story rather than a actual book I skimmed some parts because it had more of a rough draft feel. Since it would bring in new characters and elements surrounding them and Cathy then completely leave you hanging as to why it was brought up.

Connections turned out to be a wrong number for me that missed the mark . As it didn't interest me at all. I 'd reccomend skipping it. Since it left me wishing for the 25 minutes back to read something better.

I liked the idea of this story. Cathy is a college dropout girl who is not in good terms with her mother and working in a grocery store. Out of boredom, Cathy calls anonymous numbers (This is set in the era before the invention of mobile phones) say nothing and wait until they hang up on her. One day a phone call leads her to get to know Seth with whom she has a conversation and this conversation turns to a daily habit where both get to know each other more over the phone until they meet in person.

The story has some emotions to it which felt really good. There is a steamy long graphic scene towards the end which is expected as this book is categorized in the erotica genre, but overall this was an interesting idea that could have been executed in a much better way. I guess it was a decent short story.
