While this was action-packed and imaginative, I cannot whole-hardheartedly say I completely enjoyed or would recommend it. Perhaps it's the first-person writing, but I never felt completely drawn into the story at all, despite the fact that the writing was fairly competent from a technical standpoint. I understand that this is supposed to be a somewhat satirical alternate Victorian sci-fi adventure, but at times I felt a bit insulted as a reader (and not just as a female reader). The plot is a little over-wrought with satirical, Victorian female steriotypes and other "-isms"--to the point where at times, I felt "talked-down" to.. and a bit bashed-over-the -head with concepts. I "get" that Arthur is young and still supposed to be in the "ick-girls" stage--and really doesn't want to admit that he cares about his sister--more than any other girl... The female stereotypes in this book are a bit much and it's not *just* that Myrtle is so annoying. Myrtle, though, in the end had more common-sense than Arthur (and even myself) gave her credit for because she's quite the heroine near the end (I really didn't like her much).

For parents: There are quite prolific amounts mild "censored" swearing. There is also lots of fantasy-adventure and fantasy violence. There is also a bit of racism and (galactic) xenophobia (which I guess fits the Victorianism).

All-in-all, and as a young-at-heart reader, I can say this book was not a total waste of time. I rarely attempt to read books in first-person. The fact that I finished this one is a bit remarkable (I nearly quit a few times). It was kind of fun. I really (and especially) enjoyed some of the bits with Jack's "alien" crew. In the end, though, I gladly proclaimed, "Huzzah, I'm finished!" as I turned the last digital page (much as Arthur might). I really doubt I'll read the other books, though.

Larklight A Rousing Tale of Dauntless Pluck in the Farthest Reaches of Space Philip Reeve Greg Steinbruner 9781428134478 Books Reviews

I cannot express how much I love these books!
I am utterly impressed with Reeve's detailed, personable characters that are consistent and yet allowed the room to grow. The characters in this series are so delightful and varied... I am always anxious for Art's amusing and surprisingly insightful views on events, and Myrtle's delightfully tedious social commentary and lady-like instructions.

Larklight, the first book in the series, became an instant favorite, and while I loved Starcross (book two) I wasn't *quite* as attached to it as I was to Larklight. But, Mothstorm is just as good as Larklight, and honestly I can't think of a way to make either Larklight or Mothstorm more perfect!

In the third installment the Mumby family faces their strongest enemy yet and find their entire universe resting on their shoulders. (I don't know how Reeve will top that for another - hopefully another - book, but I have great faith that he will!) Mothstorm is not only action packed, busting with wit (in a fun, friendly way... nothing pretentious, only smart and amusing), but many times I found myself engrossed with the ethical and moral dilemmas the characters had to confront and touched by the troubles they had to go through and the strong relationships they have.

I was captivated from the beginning and curious until the end. And while I wasn't sure which way the story would end, or how it could possibly end in the way I was hoping, it did and it all made perfect sense (no fudging with the plots! Yay!).

Perfect for readers of any age. Reeve writes in a way that should captivate the young and the old. I can't recommend these books highly enough!
This is a ripping yarn that combines the best elements of Victorian purple prose, space pirates, evil galactic spiders (with bowler hats), and a house that floats beyond the Moon with a cranky gravity generator. While definitely aimed at the younger set, it is completely enjoyable for those more advanced in years if not maturity. I especially appreciated the subtle homage to The War of the Worlds --so well done it would never disturb a reader unfamiliar with the quote, but causing added glee for the cognoscenti.

If you require excessive rationality, dislike silliness, and judge books based on how many approved literary vegetables they force you to eat, you will not like this book. Everybody else... you are going to have such jolly fun!
I love the world that Reeve has created in this series.
Mothstorm The Horror from Beyond Uranus Georgium Sidus! book # 3 in the Larklight series
gathers familiar & new characters together for
the 3rd & final in the series. It tidies up loose ends
very satisfactorily. I love the artwork & the somewhat proper yet oddly campy language.

Larklight
introduces you to the fascinating, slightly steampunk
Victorian world, delightfully narrated in turns by siblings Art & Myrtle . The creativity of the author infuses the story with so much ingenuity that you can't help but smile and marvel at how such impossible ideas could
somehow ,magically just work. The wealth of Characters
is pretty astounding. I read these books out of turn,
starting with Starcross & then Mothstorm.

Larklight (#1)is my least favorite, but is still worthy of praise, as not only is the physical form of the book captivating,(wonderful artwork throughout)but, so also is the text with it's very quirky,"proper" prose.
StarCross
# 2 in the Larklight series
The saga continues with yet more mystery &
adventure. This is my favorite book of the series and the one that got me to read the others.

These are the sort of books that one would give as a present to a young 4th-5th grade avid reader. This series is absolutely heirloom worthy in it's hardcover form.
