Publishing An industry of out-of-control of egos, unrealistic expectations, and books with the shelf life of milk. This is Kate’s world, but for how long?

When one of Kate Mitchell’s star authors is carted away in handcuffs, she thinks it’s only the beginning of her troubles. As her world crumbles around her, Kate desperately looks for anyone to hold onto but finds that happy endings are truly works of fiction. When her career and love affair hit their expiration date, Kate sets off on a new adventure….

Starting over in California is easy, but Kate soon learns that leaving her old life behind isn’t. Nicholas Lavigne is eager to help her forget, but two things still own her heart, the dream of discovering the next great American novel, and MacDermott Ellis. As Kate tries to rebuild her life she finds a surprising gift that reboots her career in a new and unexpected direction. Suddenly her name becomes synonymous with one of the biggest bestsellers publishing has seen in ages and she's welcomed back with open arms. At the height of her success the ghosts of her past come back to remind her of the world she'd been trying to forget and the man who never let go of her heart. Behind the book, there’s always more to the story.

Welcome to Publishing, the ego has landed.

I read the first book which was brilliant! So I was very excited when the second book came out. This one was better than the first! It pushed the limits with the steamy scenes in the bedroom and the affair that Kate and Mac had. Always, in an affair there will be obstacles to get past. Some of the things that happen in the book makes me wonder how accurate the description of the publishers job is. I'm assuming it's pretty accurate. Kate finds herself growing and becoming more focused on herself so she can make a difference in her field, which any one would do in her shoes. I really felt book one was great but this one blew it out of the water! Great book! ZootZoot - Reader review in romance and sex category!

Shelf LifeThe Publicist Book Two eBook Christina George

I waited for this book on pins & needles to see what happened next. It hooked me from the start. Wow, this was more intense than the first book & I went from hating her choices to agreeing with her and cheering her on. Ms Christina could have taken the easy way out and made this a "happy ending" for everyone but I love that she didn't and made Kate face the reprocussions. And instead of just finishing out the unfinished story of the first book Ms Christina really took us for an unexpected ride through a very bizaar turn of events. The best thing though was Kate was a strong woman in her own right she didn't fold & crawl into a corner and ask everyone to pity her, she pulled herself up & started over in grand style while still being able to fall in love.

Shelf LifeThe Publicist Book Two eBook Christina George Reviews

You know when you just love a main character in a book then you fall in love with the other 2 main characters.... This is what happened in Shelf life for me. I loved Kate and her quick wit, and lovely funny personality. But I had a hate for Mac in book one, just the whole being married and cheating with Kate, but as his story became more clear I started to like him. Nick on the other hand was my favourite from the beginning, and I hoped that Kate would end up with him, so I was happy to see them together but I knew there had to be a comeback from Mac, no way would he let Kate go without a fight.

With Kate's life in disarray so returns to California to Nick to get over leaving her job, almost assaulted by her ex boss and of course the breakup with Mac. She continues on her plan to release Allan book and decides to start her own publicity company with thw help of Nick. It is beyond all of her expectations with movie deals and appearances on talk shows. It is at a after party when Kate's world is turned on its head with the appearance of Mac wanting Kate back. He plants the seed of doubt in Kate's mind in relationship with Nick, she loves him but is not in love with him. Not like she is with Mac.

That is what prompts Kate to make a huge decision abour her life, one that will change everything in hers and everyone around hers lives.
Picking up right where The Publicist left off, Christina George continues to follow Kate’s journey as she navigates her choices and decisions. I’m not always a fan of her romantic entanglements involvement with a co-worker is messy, one that is married and has a reputation as a Casanova is even messier. But, she is trying to find new footing and moved to the other side of the country to give a relationship with Nick a try.

I really did like Nick, but Kate was so unnecessarily unfeeling toward him we could see her confusion and the need to get away, but running to someone just wanting them to fix the issue was immature at best, and destructive at worst. The only piece of Kate’s life that was working was her plan to continue to publicize and promote books, starting with opening her own office as she brings a favored employee from the old firm into her new world.

Most of the story however, is Kate struggling with her next step seeing if she really does want to continue in the publishing world, and whether or not she can overcome the judgment of others regarding her decisions. Kate’s life certainly doesn’t lack for dramatic moments, and neither does the publishing world from publishers caring only about the bottom line, to authors who need therapy, the look at the people behind the curtain in the publishing world is a fun read for everyone.

Mixing in some redemption and comeuppances for the characters, and twists that resolved several of the character’s personal issues, perhaps too neatly, the story manages to stay fresh and moving forward while wrapping up many of the loose ends that appeared early on. I believe that this is expected to be a trilogy, and it will be nice to have one more look at the characters and how they are faring in the cutthroat publishing and promotion world as they navigate personalities, evolving reader tastes, and attempt to master the media outlets to get the books in front of readers.

I received an eBook copy of the title from Marketing Experts for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review all conclusions are my own responsibility.
While a few 1, 2, and 3 star reviewers knocked this book because of the negative references to Fifty Shades of Grey, I found the comment at the beginning of this book 'spot on'. The FSoG has started a cottage industry of authors getting books published that are espousing about nasty, oversexed so-called billionaires, and won't let up embellishing on the sexually explicit descriptions, all under the disguise of a "Romance Novel". Also, some comments were made about this book's f-bombs. I really didn't see it, and if so, most of the time it was an expressed anger, not just an inserted with casualness.

The author, Christina George, did a great job enlightening the reader about all of the work that goes into publishing a book. When I start a book, I finish it. You can never just go by the first chapters. Usually it gets better the more you read, and this was the case with this book. Some reviewers were put off that Mac was a married man, however had they read further on, it explained that there was a tragedy five years or so into his marriage to Carolyn, and that they had not lived together as husband and wife for the next 20 or so years. Yes, Mac should have come to the realization earlier on and ended the marriage, but there were 2 young sons involved. Nick and Katie's relationship was precarious and I didn't see them spending their lives together. I liked the interaction between Katie and Mac, and all through the book I knew that they would end up together. All in all, I think this was a good book and can recommend it.
